A Platform-Specific Guide to Exporting and Deleting your Data

Goodreads

  1. To export your data:
    1. On the website, click on your profile picture in the upper right corner > Account Settings > Account & notifications.
    2. Scroll to the bottom of the page. Second from the bottom, click the small blue link titled "Download my Goodreads data".
    3. Click "Request my data".
    4. You will receive an email with the subject "Your Data Request Confirmation". Click on the button labeled "Confirm data request" within five days after requesting your data.
    5. You will receive an email with the subject line "Your personal data is ready to download". Click the button labeled "Download data".
    6. Follow the prompts & download your data.
  2. To delete your account:
    1. On the website, click on your profile picture in the upper right corner > Account Settings > Account & notifications.
    2. Scroll to the bottom of the page. Second from the bottom, click the small red link labeled "Delete my account".
    3. Uncheck "keep all my discussion posts (anonymously, for other members' sake)" if you'd like.
    4. Click "Delete my account". A pop up will appear; click "Ok".

  1. On the app, go to Profile > Menu > Settings and Privacy > Account > Download your Data
  2. On this page, select "All data".
  3. Choose TXT files if you intend to read over your data yourself. Chose JSON files if you are going to use the data in other software. I did both, just in case.
  4. After a short while (for me, it was about 2-3 hours), you will receive a notification that your data is ready to be downloaded. Click on the link and follow the instructions.
  5. It will download as a .zip file. I recommend moving it to an external drive before attempting to open the .zip file to avoid storage issues.
  6. Important caveats: This method does not download the videos associated with your account (whether they be your own, your saves, or your likes.) It only preserves the links to those videos. It also does not preserve what posts your comments were on; however it is possible that with some cross-referencing with likes, you might be able to figure out what goes where. I took the time to download my own videos because I only had three. It seems there are tools out there that can do this on a larger scale, but I am not familiar with them.
  7. Once you have downloaded your data, you may proceed to delete your account.
